A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
