An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Because my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but immediately informed my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
