Former President Trump has yet again announced he would pressure FIFA to pull global soccer tournament matches from a host city based on the local governance, with Massachusetts now being the third such city to encounter such warnings from the White House. Additionally, Trump suggested he would consider parallel steps against LA for the 2028 Summer Games due to perceived public safety risks.
Although Trump lacks official jurisdiction to personally cancel either event, he can lobby the organizing committees overseeing each tournament to move venues.
The comments were made during a media briefing with Argentinian president Milei, who was visiting the White House following the revelation of a multibillion-dollar rescue package for the South American economy. Near the conclusion of the gathering, a reporter questioned Trump about a latest unauthorized gathering in Boston where law enforcement were assaulted and a police vehicle was set on fire. The reporter also questioned if the situation could lead to the removal of organizing rights for the larger soccer tournament.
“It's possible to take them away,” the former president remarked regarding the FIFA World Cup matches, scheduled to be staged at Gillette Stadium. “Their mayor is poor … she is radical left, and activists are taking over sections of the city. It's a pretty big claim, don't you think?”
Unauthorized gatherings, a social media-driven trend where participants assemble on urban roads after dark to perform stunts, have become a ongoing issue in metropolitan centers since the coronavirus closures. Latest such gatherings have escalated into violence in the state, notably in downtown. Yet, these occurrences are generally not seen as linked to any specific ideological group.
“If a mayor is failing, and I perceive there’s dangerous circumstances, I'd call Gianni [Infantino], who is excellent, and say let’s move it to an alternate venue,” the former president stated during the event. “He will do that. He might not prefer the action, but he would comply. Without hesitation, he would.”
Gianni Infantino has been open his attempts to be closely connected with the former president before the upcoming World Cup, planned to be staged in multiple US locations across the US along with two in the northern neighbor and multiple in Mexico. The organization's leader has been present at various White House events, facilitated Trump present the FIFA club trophy after the championship match, and has even postponed his FIFA's internal meeting to join Trump on a trip to the Gulf states this year.
This has not stopped, Trump from warning about the cancellation of World Cup events from different locations. Recently, Seattle and the Bay Area metropolis came under similar comments, with Trump asserting both urban centers were “run by ideological activists who are clueless what they are doing,” while criticizing the safety level of both locales and suggesting that events could be shifted.
Victor Montagliani rebuffed Trump’s claims when he commented days later at a gathering in England.
“It’s our competition, under our authority, FIFA makes those decisions,” the vice-president stated. “Politely to national heads, soccer is more important than them and football will survive their administration and their policies. It's the strength of this sport, that it is transcends a single person and beyond a nation.”
On Tuesday, Trump’s response to a question about the Massachusetts city included a comparable warning regarding the upcoming Summer Games.
“If I believed the city was not going to be prepared properly, I'd relocate it to a different city as needed,” he remarked. “On that one I’d probably have to secure a different kind of consent, but we'd do that.”
The permission Trump refers to would must come through the Olympic governing body. The head, Kirsty Coventry, was chosen to her role in this year and has yet to meet publicly with him, though she said that she desires a discussion with Trump at a future time.
Trump also condemned California governor Newsom’s handling of recent California fires, remarking that a similar situation could cause the cancellation of the Olympics.
“When Newsom is uncooperative, we are going to have to be strict,” the former president commented.
The warning was similarly clear for the Massachusetts city.
“The city should clean up their act,” Trump stated. “That’s all I will say.”
