Going California Sober: Research Indicates Marijuana May Assist in Reducing Drinking Consumption

Emerging research published in the prestigious psychiatry journal suggests that adopting a sober lifestyle involving cannabis approach could substantially help individuals lower their drink consumption.

Research Methodology and Bar Lab Setting

Researchers from Brown University carried out a unique experiment where volunteers were provided with marijuana joints to smoke before entering a carefully constructed simulated bar environment.

  • Participants had the option to drink up to 8 small drinks.
  • The experiment was conducted on three occasions with varying tetrahydrocannabinol potencies: 7.2%, 3.1%, and a placebo cannabis.

Great care was taken to mimic a real-life bar atmosphere, complete with low light and drinks on tap to guarantee subject realism.

“We wanted to ensure that when given the opportunity, you would be really driven to consume alcohol,” explained the principal investigator.

Key Findings and Impact on Drinking

Outcomes revealed a notable decrease in drink intake after participants smoked cannabis:

  • Drink intake fell by nineteen percent after using moderate-THC cannabis.
  • The drop was more pronounced with 7.2% THC marijuana, leading to a twenty-seven percent decrease compared to the control.

Wider Trends and Additional Studies

Increased legalization has spurred a significant rise in cannabis consumption, which has doubled over the past decade.

At the same time, drink consumption is at a historic low, with numerous individuals turning to substitutes like marijuana.

Crucial to note that forty percent of study subjects met the criteria for alcohol dependence.

Although marijuana might be a potential solution to excessive drinking, researchers warn that further study is required.

“We’re not ready to advise individuals in treatment for drinking problems, ‘Proceed and replace cannabis, and it will work out for you,’” a study author commented.
