New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
