Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.
Mr Comey's legal representative filed the plea representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
His attorney announced he would attempt to have the legal matter terminated for several reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
The former director was charged just days after the former president pressured his top legal official to move forward against him.
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they aimed to submit multiple motions to terminate the legal matter before a court case, stating the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully appointed to take over the case.
The former director's legal matter was originally overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under pressure from Trump after his examination into another rival - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.
The former director appeared in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the previous administration recently fired.
Upon hearing to the court state his rights and the two counts against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he comprehended the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the proceedings.
James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about a few months into Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.
While in office, the director sparked a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against the candidate were never brought, leading to negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.
The federal government assert Mr Comey lied to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the upper house by saying he had not authorized someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to media organizations data about the FBI investigations.
Government lawyers also charge James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, obstruct and slow" the panel by making false statements to it.
In a video James Comey posted to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was not guilty and alleged Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".
"Our household have known for considerable time that there are consequences to challenging Mr Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "So let's have a trial."
The charges against James Comey surfaced after Trump published on social media insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, charge Mr Comey and other people.
